The Foreign Language Department, founded in 1984, has become a foreign language training institution for both three-year and four-year students with good teaching facilities and excellent teaching staff. It not only shoulders the responsibility of training its own students but also offers courses in College English for students from all majors across the university. Up to now, more than 2,000 students have graduated from the Department. Many of them have become the backbone of their workplaces.

The Department is sub-divided into The Teaching and Research Group of Basic Courses for English Majors, The Teaching and Research Group of Specialized and Theoretical Courses for English Majors, No. 1 Teaching and Research Group of College English for Non-English Majors, and No. 2 Teaching and Research Group of College English for Non-English Majors.

The Department has 50 members of staff, of whom 46 belong to the faculty. Among the teaching staff, 4 are professors, 12 are associate professors, 14 are lecturers, and 14 are assistant teachers.

For international exchange, the Department has recruited more than 30 native English speakers to teach in Yulin University since 1993, bringing great benefit to our English learners. Meanwhile, we have sent more than ten teachers to the US, the UK and Singapore to further their study. All of them have returned to their teaching. We hope to build a link with overseas higher education institutions.

Currently, there is one 48-seat standard language lab, three 42-seat multi media language labs, three 80-seat multi media digital language labs and one language lab accessing network, which greatly facilitate teaching.

Presently, there are 20 classes with over 760 students in the Department. The majority of the students are recruited from Shaanxi Province while the rest come from Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Ningxia, Gansu, Hubei, Hu’nan, Anhui, Shanxi, Shandong, Guizhou, Sichuan, Chongqin, He’nan, Yun’nan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning.

English Language (a four-year BA program)

Objectives:to provide students with systematic English knowledge and basic skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating, to equip them with communicative abilities in English, and enable them to become qualified senior middle-school English teachers or translators in various companies and organizations.
